On this page you will find a number of links (in the left hand column) to other documents and
sites that discuss church governance, effectively addressing church growth, and effective
leadership strategies for growing churches. We hope that you will take an
opportunity to read some of these documents and become more familiar with the challenges an
opportunities God has blessed us with and thay you will be active in our ongoing discussion and
planning around them.
Size Matters
The three links referencing "Size Matters" are a series of articles written by Glenn Lucas
and published by the Center for U.S. Missions in their bi-weekly publication,
Following Jesus into the U.S. Mission Field. In the
first article, Glenn
describes a classification of churches based on active membeships of less than 150 and the roles of
pastors and governing boards in those congregations. In his
second article, he goes on
to describe these roles in churches with membership of 150-350, and 350+. In his
third article, Glenn
discusses the obligations and potential issues for governing boards within church structures.
Great Board Debate
Here is an article
that was provided by Jack Giles, who is our NID-Congregational Services representatitve, and a
parishoner of a church that has transitioned to Policy- Based governance. The article
provides a pretty balanced view of PBG, contrasting it, and the role of the governing board in
this structure with other traditional non-profit governance structures.
